Obwohl sie in guten N\u00e4chten an dunklen Standorten mit blo\u00dfem Auge erkennnbar ist, steht sie h\u00e4ufig im Schatten des Andromeda-Nebels.<br \/>\nSie ist etwa 2,9 Mio Lichtjahre entfernt und geh\u00f6rt neben der Andromeda-Galaxis und unserer eigenen Milchstra\u00dfe zur lokalen Galaxiengruppe deren drittgr\u00f6\u00dftes Mitglied sie ist.<br \/>\nGiovanni Batista Hodierna entdeckte sie 1654, Charles Messier unabh\u00e4ngig davon 1764 erneut und katalogisierte sie als M33.<\/p>\n<p>M33 kann an guten Standorten in dunklen N\u00e4chten mit blossem Auge gesehen werden, jedoch ist ein Feldstecher zu Beobachtung am besten geeignet.<br \/>\nIhre Gesamthelligkeit von 5,7m ist auf eine Fl\u00e4che von ca 70&#215;45 Bogenminuten verteilt (fast 4 Vollmonddurchmesser)daher ist die\u00a0 Fl\u00e4chenhelligkeit nur sehr gering.<\/p>\n<p>Die Galaxis enth\u00e4lt viele auff\u00e4llige Sternentstehungsgebiete, die sogar eigene NGC-Nummern erhalten haben.
